Kettenpost

Automatically split long text into post threads for Mastodon, Bluesky, and LinkedIn

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a URL on Mastodon always count as 23 characters, no matter how long it is?

Mastodon shortens every URL automatically when posting and counts it as a flat 23 characters for the limit, regardless of its actual length. Kettenpost applies this rule only when "Mastodon" is selected — on Bluesky, LinkedIn, or "Custom", the URL counts with its real length.

Why do emoji count differently on Bluesky than I'd expect?

Bluesky counts characters by Unicode grapheme cluster, not by UTF-16 code unit. An emoji like 👍 is technically two UTF-16 units but counts as one character on Bluesky — the same applies to combined emoji (e.g. a family emoji made of four individual emoji joined together), which also count as a single character. Kettenpost mirrors this counting method when "Bluesky" is selected.

Why doesn't the character count in Kettenpost exactly match the platform's own app?

Every platform has its own, sometimes undocumented edge-case rules for counting characters (e.g. special handling of hashtags or mentions). Kettenpost mirrors the main known rules (Mastodon's flat URL count, Bluesky's grapheme count), but can't reproduce every edge case of every platform exactly. For very tight limits, it's worth checking the target platform's own preview before posting.

Is my text stored or sent to a server?

No. Kettenpost runs entirely in your browser — the text you enter is never uploaded, stored, or logged anywhere. Just like Textreiniger, your text never leaves your device.
